The American Dream in Music For Torching - Literature Essay Samples

In A.M. Homes’ novel Music for Torching, married couple Paul and Elaine find their relationship to be as static and boring as the Westchester County suburb in which they live. Unsatisfied with their marriage and fearful of a lifeless future, they take out their frustration with suburbia through misguided sexual encounters, insulting verbal spats, and fits of jealousy directed towards their seemingly perfect friends and neighbors. Desperate for a change in their lives, Paul and Elaine purposely set fire to their house, but it does not burn down completely as they intended. Rather, their house sits dirty and damaged while they are forced to reconcile their actions. Having neither money nor resources to move away, their family continues to live in the soot-filled house while selling many of their clothes and possessions. Paul and Elaine spend a few nights at the home of their friends Pat and George Neilson, whose house is always pristine and everything is in perfect order. The id yllic nature of the Neilson’s house seems to exacerbate the problems between Paul and Elaine, as they frequently fight and see themselves as frauds and inferiors. Through these fraught turns of narrative, Homes dissects the concept of the white-picket-fence style of ideal American life while showcasing the shortcomings of traditional gender and familial roles within the home. When we consider gender roles, one of the most well-known is the role of the mother as cook and housekeeper. Stereotypes would have you believe that a woman’s job is to have kids and take care of the house; cleaning, doing laundry, and cooking meals. Music for Torching’s Elaine exemplifies this lifestyle, as the book opens with her husband Paul chastising her for the amount of fat in their dinner. As the novel continues, Paul berates his wife who â€Å"stands at the sink, in an apron, in Playtex gloves, trying to protect herself† (Homes 1). Elaine embodies the trope of the helpless wife. She is a self-conscious mother who cannot satisfy her husband and attempts to â€Å"make everything good again† (Homes 1) by keeping a nice house, an endeavor at which she repeatedly fails. It becomes obvious throughout the story that Elaine was not born to be a stay-at-home mother. She is a bad cook, she dislikes cleaning, and she finds no satisfaction from existing at ho me. Because she is forced to fulfill this role that she has no desire to play, she comes to resent her house and everything that it represents. Driven by a need to escape and spurred by her inability to cook dinner, she encourages Paul when he pours lighter fluid on their house, and she herself kicks over the grill, marking the finality of her decision to leave all the problems of their life in the ashes. When the house fails to actually burn down, however, Elaine is distraught. Homes states that â€Å"Elaine sits in the car, thinking she is back to scratch, zero, square one. She’s back to where she started, only now it is worse. Now she will have to take care of the house, tend it like a sick person. She imagines running away; where would she go? Into the woods to live like a wildwoman on berries and nuts? Into the city to sleep on a steam grate? She thinks of running. She undoes her seat belt. She is reaching to unlock the door when she sees Paul coming back. She sees Paul coming and pictures herself taking off down the street-the streetlights like searchlights, constantly catching her. She sees Paul chasing her, not knowing why she is running, why he is chasing, except that it is his instinct to catch her, to drag her back† (Homes 29). By burning down the house, Elaine was trying to escape from her role as the keeper of the home. But now that the house stands, wrecked , it is just another thing that she will have to take care of. She not only tends to the needs of her children, her husband, and her parents, but now she must do all of that while re-building the house that she so hates. Furthermore, the burnt house now reflects Elaine’s feelings about her marriage to Paul. She knows that he uses her for food and sex, she knows that he is having multiple affairs with other women, and she knows that he does not value her as a partner or a wife. However, their marriage is still stubbornly standing, just like their house, yet it is full of holes and dirt. Elaine imagines what it would be like to run away, but she has only ever known one role in life; wife and mother. She has no idea what she would do if she left her home and her marriage, because as bad as they are they are the only things that she has a strong connection to. In this passage, Elaine questions why she and Paul continue to promote the facade of their love. She imagines running fro m him but not knowing why, and he chases her for no reason other than that it must be the right thing to do. Paul’s instinct is to drag her back to the house despite the fact that they both feel unhappy with their situation. However, they are both striving to be the ideal couple, and they know that divorce would besmirch their reputation among their well-to-do friends. Their reason for staying together seems to be based entirely on the idea that they have familial roles to play as parents and lovers, and that breaking from that would make them outcasts from society. While Elaine is struggling to fulfill her place as a wife and mother, so too is Paul scrambling to act like the ideal man; strong, protective, and stoic. Paul is shown to be weak of character, as he cheats on his wife, lies to his children, and acts immorally in many ways with no remorse. While Paul knows that his actions are wrong, he does not want to expose himself as a person with faults as that would damage his standing as a man. Paul continually needs to prove himself as smarter and stronger than Elaine, and although she makes it clear to him that she is aware of his misdeeds he pretends like he can get away with anything. After the house burning, however, Paul realizes that he can no longer just pretend like there are no problems in their lives. Homes states that â€Å"The house is not something Paul can make a virtuous and manly show of Mr. Fix-it with. There’s no reaching a hand in to turn a loose screw-saving them a handyman’s house call and seventy-five bucks . The house isn’t even like a radio he can pluck apart with the enthusiasm of learning how things work, sure he’ll be able to put back every diode. Paul has never fixed anything. And he reminds himself that he did this, he brought it on; without a moment’s pause to wonder whether or not it could be reconstructed, he destroyed it. Worse yet-and this is the part he’s admitted to no one-he got a kick out of it. It felt invigorating, it felt fucking fantastic† (Homes 90). Paul is used to being the man of the house, the person who can perform physical tasks and act as the quintessential masculine figure. In this case, however, Paul realizes that his actions are not something he can fix using any type of manliness. Whereas before his family relied on him to solve simple problems-tightening screws, fixing radios-he knows that he cannot repair the damage done to their house on his own. In this case again, the house serves as a symbol for his marriage to Ela ine. He used to put minimal effort into the relationship, merely fixing small things when they came up, but now severe damage has been done and he cannot simply brush it away. It’s going to take actual hard work and cooperation to rebuild both his house and his marriage, and Paul is coming to the conclusion that he enjoyed the destruction. He instigated the fire, and he continually treated Elaine badly because he liked the feeling of power that came along with it. As a man, he feels the need to dominate, to control and command. Yet with the burning of the house that power is gone, and gone with it is the sense of masculinity that was motivating so many of Paul’s actions. Music for Torching lays bare the realities of marriage, family, and suburban life in a provocative way. Elaine and Paul are grotesque characters whose actions seem ludicrous when compared to those of the actual average middle-class American. However, the pressures and anxiousness of suburban ideals in the novel ring true. Paul and Elaine’s problems are not mystical or deeply psychological; they are products of the label-obsessed culture that assigns each person a specific role in society. The man is to make money and protect his family, the woman is to raise the children and keep the house, the man is to have a mistress or two and the women is to remain content and unbothered. Elaine despises the life of a housewife but feels that she has a duty to retain her position. Paul is inwardly self-conscious but presents a pompous attitude in order to seem powerful and masculine. The culmination of these lies and falsehoods eats away at their marriage and their home, and in the end th ey have no choice but to send everything up in smoke.

Gay Adoption Should Be Legal - 1203 Words

Gay adoption is a touchy subject to a lot of people. Even though gay adoption became legal in all 50 states on June 26, 2017 everyone still seems to have an opinion on the matter and a lot of the opinions lean toward not allowing gay couples to adopt. There are so many children in the foster care system that need loving and stable homes so why not let gay couples give that to them? There is a lot of evidence to show that gay couples can be just as good at parenting as a straight couple. Maybe even better due to them being committed and better motivated because they chose to be parents. No child should be denied parents that will give them a loving and stable home just as no couple should be denied a child due to their sexual preference.†¦show more content†¦Not a single study has found a difference (between children of gay and straight parents) that you can construe as harmful. (Dan Gilgoff, 2005) While the debate continues on whether or not to allow gay couples to adopt, th e numbers of children with gay parents keeps increasing. Children with gay parents thrive and continue to do just as well as children in straight homes. However, critics disagree and feel that children living in gay homes are at risk of having an unhappy life. Gregory Rogers, a writer living in South Africa, believes that children in gay homes will have issues that include the instability of homosexual relationships, evidence of widespread pedophilia within the gay community, and the possible psychological and social problems associated with children reared in homes without a mother and a father. Rogers believes it is wrong to trust homosexual couples with the fragile and impressionable development of children.(2013) Even though a lot of people feel the same way that Rogers does, that does not mean that it is true. Statistics have shown that children that are raised by gay parents do just as good as children raised by straight parents. Abortion in the bible free essay sample

Everyone has their different approach on abortions. There are two main approaches. Those two approaches are known as pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice is advocating a woman’s choice right to control her own body and her choice to carry and bring a child into this world. Pro-life is advocating full legal protection of embryos and fetuses. While everyone is appointed their own free will, it is illegal for a mother to murder her born child; therefor it should not be legal for a mother to abort her unborn child. Abortion is murder, every heart beating living human life should have a right to live, and no reason should justify abortion. Other than the exception that if the mother’s life is endangered by the pregnancy. There is always a second option over abortion, adoption. Abortion is murder. The life of an embryo begins at conception. The embryo is a human life. It is not a plant life. Nor is it a chicken embryo. A fertilized human embryo had its own unique genetic human signature that is different from either of its parents. That clearly shows it is not an additional tissue mass belonging to the mother as some pro-choice advocates would suggest. Each embryo has a unique genetic make-up as does ever human life. As well as being a separate and unique, a fertilized embryo is ontologically no different than a human toddler, adolescent, or adult. Nothing is added or taken away from the embryo except for food and waste. It does not go under any fundamental ontological change after conception; it simply grows and develops just like any other toddler would grow or develop. The fetus’s heart beat starts beating between 18 and 25 days. Electrical brainwaves have been recorded at 43 days on a EEG. If the absence of a brainwave indicates death, why will pro-abortionist not accept that the presence of a brainwave is a conformation of life? The brain and body systems are present 8 weeks and functioning a month later. At 8 weeks, the baby will wake and sleep, make a fist, suck his thumb, and get hiccups. At the end of week 9, the baby has its own unique finger prints. At 11-12 weeks, the baby is sensitive to heat, touch, light and noise. All body systems are working. He weighs about 28g and is 6-7. 5 cm long. Yet in various states abortion can be performed up to 24 weeks. But a the ability for the fetus to express its thoughts and opinions is not developed for many years late, if their moth chooses to let them make it that far. There is always the fight between the mother’s right to make her decisions of her body and the unborn child’s right to life. Nobody should have the right to choose rather the unborn fetus has a right to be brought into the world and continue its life outside of the mother’s womb. If everyone has the right over their body, the child should have the same rights. Like in the movie my sister keeper where the mother had a baby just to keep the other child alive. She had no right to do that and that child had the right to make decisions for her and her well-being. Even though the unborn child could not speak and express its opinion of what should happened to it gives no one any right to take that child’s rights away and end the child’s life before it has a chance to makes its own decisions. In the bible Genesis 9:6 states that we are made in Gods image and therefore our lives are precious and whoever takes the life of another human being, forfeits the right to his own life† Because all life was created by God and belongs to Him, no one has the right to murder another human being. You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13. The Lord hates hands that shed innocent blood according to Proverbs 6:16-17. The Bible also teaches that we need to defend the weak and the helpless. Speak up for those who cannot speak for they defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 How can you make a fetus more important than a grown woman? they might ask. In reality, outlawing abortion wouldnt be giving unborn children more rights; it would simply gain for them the one most fundamental right that no one can live without, the right to life. If the mother does not abort the baby the woman remains pregnant. This will result in her maybe feeling signs of sickness, fatigue, reduced mobility, and enlarged body. These are all temporary conditions. On other hand if the woman does abort the child, the child loses its life and rights to have a life these are permanent decisions. That child will never get to experience life other than the short experience in the mother’s womb. In 1971, Judith Jarvis, an American moral philosopher and abortion advocate, published what some call the most widely reprinted essay in all of contemporary philosophy. A Defense of Abortion concedes that fetuses should be recognized as persons under the law, but argues that the right to life consists not in the right not to be killed, but rather in the right not to be killed unjustly. Jarvis then offers her violinist argument as an example of a situation in which most people would recognize the moral justice in allowing an innocent human being to die. This whole paragraph comes from http://www. abort73. com/abortion/competing_rights/. Therefore, you need to cite the entire paragraph. To do otherwise is plagiarism. When you use someone else’s words – verbatim – and do not place them in quotation marks and use proper in-text citation, you have committed plagiarism. While I do not believe that you have done so intentionally, (as you do indicate the web site in your Works Cited page), I do think that you copied and pasted a large chunk of information in support of your â€Å"argument† for this paper. I suggest a few things: #1 do not copy and paste from online sources. Re-phrase the information (this is called paraphrasing) in your own words and introduce the data/supporting information in your own words. Give yourself enough time to do this; to do this correctly, you need the time to synthesize the information that you are learning/reading before you â€Å"rephrase it† in your own words. Secondly, please read your textbook chapter about Argumentation-Persuasion essays that deal with introducing information and citing information as in-text citations. People try to justify a logical reason to find abortion necessary. Three of the main reasons women have abortions are due to rape, incest and a disabled fetus. If she was aware that she had a possibility that the horrible accident would have an outcome of pregnancy than she should seek medical help to prevent from getting pregnant. If she refused to the unborn child should not have to pay the consequences. When it comes to a child being conceived during an incest relationship it often results in the abortion. Why? The child did not choose for you to have a incest relationship. Usually, the reason is fear that the child will come out physically or mentally disabled. When in all reality the child only has a twenty five percent chance come out disabled. Even if a fetus has a chance of coming out with a disability, should it be either physical or mentally, the child is still a human and rather the mother or an adoptive parent should be cared for an loved. If the mother does not believe she is capable of giving the child the needed attention or love if the child is conceived through rape, incest or has a possibility of coming out disabled there is always an alternative to having an abortion. Adoption should be chosen over abortion. Some people may argue that it is difficult for the mother to give up her child for adoption, but if the mother could make the choice to end her child’s life she should be able to make the ecision to give her child to a family who will cherish the child’s life. Over half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended. While four out of ten of those pregnancies end in abortion and twelve percent of women cannot conceive or carry a child to full term. Instead of taking the life away from the child give it a chance to live, give a family that cannot have a child of their own a chance to have the opportunity to have a child to raise and love. That child was put on the earth for a purpose even if the conception was caused by a horrific act. There are many more arguments against abortion although there should be none. Everyone should be able to see that this vicious act of selfishness is immoral because from the conception a human life is being created. That human life should have the right to life even if the fetus is in the womb still thou should still have the rights have every walking human has. Granted the mother does not want the baby there is always the option for adoption. No reason rather it be rape, incest or the chance of the fetus being born with a physical or mental disability should make an abortion right. Only exception being that the mother’s life is in threat while carrying the fetus. Fragment; also a bit of a logical dichotomy between the first sentence of this paragraph and the last, wouldn’t you say? Take a look at that, as in one breath you are saying there should be no arguments FOR abortion, and then at the end of your paragraph, you concede that there is at least one exception. Again, take the time to think your argument through†¦percolate (like a coffee pot) on the information before the words dribble out onto the page for others to read.

Statistics order 2 Essay Example

Statistics order 2 Essay The article on Japans’ joblessness rates is given a clear heading. That, the 3.7% unemployment rate is the lowest in nine years is incorrect.   The 3.6% recorded in February of 1998, is much lower than 3.7% June.   If the June rate was the lowest, the rate should be less than 3.6%. The interpretation of the household spending rate gives readers clear understanding of why the rate is computed.   We have, however, not given the initial and final values to determine the accuracy of the said increment.   The lack of this information makes it impossible to gauge the margin by which the forecasted value was missed.   The article gives an explanation of why the Bank of Japan would raise the interest rate.   This informs the citizenly clearly what causes such major decisions in government.   The article in this respect serves its rightful purpose, explaining complex details in simple terms. The decrement in consumer price indices, 0.1, is not given measurement units.   Should it be 0.1% or what does 0.1 represent? But the article has explained what is included and excluded in the computation of the index.   On unemployment numbers, the article should have said number of people jobless.   Leaving it at just numbers may raise questions.   The report should give which quantities were measured, that is, people.   The increment and final values are given which ease consumers’ work of comparison.   Apart from these shortcomings, the article is very informative and has good flow.   The dates of the report are indicated, the report is for the month of June though the year should have been stated because comparison is done with results of another year. The article on college graduates salary scale is very well presented.   The article includes the sample size picked and the firm that did the survey.   Its always important for a research, study to be owned by somebody or some firm.   This gives readers a chance to follow up if they n eed more details.   The order is excellent as a good breakdown is given to every subtopic. A small table has been given used which informs the readers a lot just at a glance.   It would however have been better if the contents of the table were arranged with the highest improved salary group first.   It would be easier to follow than the way it was on the article.   It would also allow better comparison to be done.   There heading given is quite captivating, it catches the attention of readers.   The study is inferential since the results from a sample are used to generalize on the whole population.   The results suggest that all job group categories’ salaries had increased. (http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/04/pf/college/grads_salaries/index.htm?cnn=yes).The accuracy of the increments cannot be tested since initial salaries are not given, only the percentage increment is shown.   Such figures could easily have been included in the table.   Space may have been t he problem but reporters should always remember that statistics should be to inform as much as possible even under constraints.   Effects of the results have been briefly but informatively discussed and thus shows the importance of the survey. On the article on mortgage applications, the flow of the results is poor.  Ã‚   The reporter was not keen enough as he repeated a statement.   This shows that the article was written in a hurry and more details could have been left out.   The study is a descriptive one since all applications constitute the population.   The report allows good comparison of previous and current values. In the article, explanation is offered for what is excluded in the computation of the 30 year mortgage rate.   It is explained also how the fall in the index value is affects business in the real world.   Another statement has been repeated with a little change of words but having the same meaning.   This further questions the reporter’s thor oughness in the presentation.   The reporter was just writing to fill up space, not to convey any worthwhile information.   Such reporting has made the report doubtful and readers could easily dismiss the whole of it!The accuracy of the results is also put in question.   The writer does not seem to have understood the report she/he read which resulted to giving insufficient information.   Such insufficient information is what causes a bad view of statistics.   No wonder then that the name of the reporter is missing.   The term ‘seasonality’, being statistical term, should be explained to the readers.   The effects of falling home prices on the mortgage companies has been well discussed.   This displays good use of statistical knowledge. Statistics should be used to describe why things are moving the way they are, for example, why are some mortgage companies being liquidated?   Answer is because of failing home prices. The report of GDP growth is well or dered.   It has the time frame given, the report is for the 2nd quarter but we are not told when that quarter begins or ends and when the last quarter began and ended.   The heading of the article is satisfactory as it gives readers enough information on what the articles is about.   The article is broken down into sub units and explanation as to how they affected to the GDP is given.   The PCE deflator is explained, that is, the composition used in its computation and the use to which it is put is mentioned. The forecast figures of the economists have been indicated giving readers the opportunity to evaluate the margins of error.   The reporter of this article managed to present very complicated information in understandable terms.   Matters of economic performance baffle many and simplification of these matters helped a lot.   The accuracy of the computations cannot be ascertained since not all initial and final values are given.   The report, however, does a good c omparison between first and second quarters.   The interaction of various indices with the overall economic performance is well covered. The article on home prices has a proper heading which fully details the content that the report is intended to address.   The results are well presented by breaking them down.   The composition of the indices is included.   There are, however, no explanations on what there indices mean or are used for.   More information should be provided to ensure that the consumers of the data understand the implications of all measures used.   The study is inferential since only a sample is used to infer on the overall industry performance.   Since the growth has been declining for quite a long time it is easier to use a table to present the extent of the decline. The report only gives percentage drops with initial values missing.   This makes it hard to determine the accuracy of the results.   The report could have been extended to have more d etails.
